ABOUT CARBON280

Carbon280 is an Australian technology company, based in Perth, that is playing a pivotal role in the future of large scale hydrogen storage.

Carbon280 is commercialising a technology called Hydrilyte®, a multi-patented solution for safely storing hydrogen at ambient temperature and pressure.

The Hydrilyte® Technology Pilot (HTP) is a 100kW TRL6 prototype which will prove the Hydrilyte® technology at an industrially relevant scale. The pilot is sited next to our lab in Kwinana in the middle of the West Australian Trade Coast. HTP will start operating in August 2025 and we expect to have data for partners and investors by October 2025.

The pilot and lab were funded through a $11.1 million seed investment led by Woodside Energy, Australia’s largest energy company and supported by Hive Energy – a UK renewable company and a family office from Singapore. With an additional $5.5m of R&D rebates from the Australian Government, the total capital is around $16.6m.

Why Carbon280?

Prior to Industrialisation, and since the end of the last ice age, CO2 levels had stabilised at around 280ppm. They are now over 400ppm and climbing. If good people do nothing, the planet will become unliveable.

Our company name – Carbon280 – is a reminder that Net Zero isn’t good enough, the real goal should be to restore CO2 to pre-industrial levels. Above all else we need to be driven to protect our planet as it’s the only one we’ve got.

Our Commitment

At Carbon280 we should always ask ourselves if what we’re doing is good for the planet. It’s a simple question, which may not have a simple or straightforward answer because often, what is seemingly good for business is not good for people and the planet.

OUR VISION

We build transformational technologies

Hydrilyte® is a transformational technology. It enables hydrogen, which is one of the most difficult molecules to store, to be stored and handled safely, using existing equipment and supply chains. Hydrilyte® doesn’t have to be made safe – like ammonia – it is inherently safe, even when things go wrong. Hydrilyte® is already undercutting the costs of competing hydrogen storage technologies, and we expect these costs to come down dramatically as we bring our research through to our products. Hydrilyte® enables hydrogen to be safely and cost effectively used, across the wide range of industries that need it for its chemical, heat and energy properties.
