This week at the Hydrilyte® Technology Pilot, we received our custom-built gas analyser. In addition to ensuring plant safety, the gas analyser will also be monitoring the HTP hydrogen gas streams to provide empirical evidence of the hydrogen purity.
The Role of the Custom-Built Gas Analyser
Hydrilyte® is a suspension of magnesium powder in mineral oil. The mineral oil plays no part in the hydrogen storage reactions but makes it possible to store and transport hydrogen under ambient conditions. The mineral oil is selected to ensure that it does not crack under standard operating conditions. This distinguishes it from LOHCs and Ammonia (as a hydrogen carrier) which both require cracking to release the hydrogen.
The benefit of not cracking the oil is that the hydrogen released from Hydrilyte® has minimum levels of hydrocarbons, which in turn minimises any need for downstream purification or diluent make-up in most expected use cases.
