Woodside Energy and Hive Energy invest in hydrogen storage pilot

Carbon280 announcement 19th Dec 2022:

Mark Rheinlander, founder and CEO of Carbon280, announced today that Carbon280 has successfully raised A$7.6M to fund a pilot of the Hydrilyte® hydrogen storage technology in which Carbon 280 has a globally exclusive licence. Global energy company, Woodside Energy and  leading UK green energy developer, Hive Energy were the participants in the funding round.

Hydrilyte®, which is a metal hydride dust suspended in a liquid, is a new technology for storing hydrogen. The mixture is stable at atmospheric conditions and is safe for people to handle. Being a liquid, it can be stored and transported using existing liquid fuels infrastructure, which enables rapid scale-up of the technology. Among the many advantages of Hydrilyte®, it is made from raw materials that are inexpensive and globally abundant.

A Perth-based Hydrilyte® Technology Pilot will seek to demonstrate the ability of Hydrilyte® and the Hydrilyte® Hydrogen Storage System to store and release hydrogen safely and economically.

Mr Rheinlander said: “We are delighted to have landed world-class investors for whom the Hydrilyte® technology is a strategic addition to their hydrogen plans and proposed projects. Woodside’s experience with LNG scale engineering and access to global energy markets, combined with Hive’s growing portfolio of international renewable hydrogen projects, will enable Carbon280 to seek to expand Hydrilyte® hydrogen storage globally.”

Why is this important?

Hydrogen is useful across many industry sectors. These include: removing the intermittency from renewable generation, fuelling vehicles that are too large for current battery technologies and as a feedstock for many industrial and chemical processes. However, while one kilogram of hydrogen contains three times the energy of a kilogram of diesel, one kilogram of hydrogen takes up 11 cubic metres of space at sea level, compared to just over a litre of diesel. This makes it hard to store and transport. The conventional approach is to compress it to very high pressures or to liquify it, which means cooling it to just above absolute zero. Both of these approaches are expensive and inherently hazardous. The multi-patented Hydrilyte® technology from Australian company Carbon280 stores hydrogen without the need for high-pressure compression or cryogenic cooling. The Hydrilyte® is a liquid containing a suspended metal dust that forms a chemical bond with hydrogen. The chemical bond is very stable and Hydrilyte® can safely retain 100% of the hydrogen stored in it.

In addition, Hydrilyte® enables to move hydrogen, and therefore energy, using the existing infrastructure developed for the fossil fuel industry, reducing CO2 emissions and supporting the economy.
